Last night we attended the private view of A Flock of Benches exhibition at Nest, Bradford Street Birmingham. Nest is hosting the first exhibition of eight specially commissioned benches made by groups from across the UK as part of The Knitting Salon project.
Initiated by Trevor Pitt, in 2008, The Knitting Salon project actively promotes the sharing of knitting skills, the creative uses of locally sourced British wool and impromptu conversations in public spaces.
Following a set of instructions, each bench has been collectively customised using knitting and felting techniques. Each yarn has been hand spun from the fleeces of local sheep or processed by a small scale company in the UK.
Trevor Pitt is a Birmingham based artist and founder of POD Projects with which he collaborates with artists, organisations and the public.
Following this exhibition at NEST (on till 1 Oct) the benches will be showing at The Public, West Bromwich, 6-31 Oct.
Knitting instructions can be found below!!....
